General Meeting with Guest Speaker
June 26 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm$5
This months guest speaker will be Angela Allen and her Guide Dog, Piper.
Angela was born with an eye condition called Aniridia and Glaucoma. She had her left eye removed in her teens. Her eyesight continued to decrease over the years with cataract developing in her right eye. Almost blind in her twenties, Angela found it terrifying to leave her house.
With assistance from Irish Guide Dogs in Ireland, where she lived at the time, Angela received her first Guide Dog. In 2009, she moved to Australia with her fourth guide dog, Hamish. Both of them had a relatively smooth transition settling in Australia with the support of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.
Now with her fifth guide dog Angela continues to pursue and enjoy an active, busy and an independent lifestyle.
She loves travelling, both local and overseas, swimming, walking, music, singing, set-dancing, listening to books, meeting people as well as learning new skills. In addition to her numerous commitments, she is involved in various community activities and is an active volunteer for fundraising activities for Guide Dogs Central Coast Support Group.
As a PR and motivational Speaker for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, together with Guide Dog Piper, Angela regularly visit schools, clubs, seniors and other community groups to talk about her own experience with vision issues, how she manages her life, living with a guide dog and the many different ways anyone with vision impairment can be assisted by the organisation to life an active and independent life.
As a working Guide Dog, Piper will be in harness therefore we do ask that members and visitors do not pat, feed or distract the Dog during the visit.
